Identifying the relationship between neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) antibody

Watkins Claudia , James Tanner , Thomas MD Katharine

Background: Glutamic acid decarboxylase 65-kilodalton isoform (GAD65) antibody is a known to be present in inhibitory interneurons and pancreatic islet β-cells. Arino et al suggests that high levels of GAD65 present with neurological symptoms should prompt physicians to screen patients for occult cancer. The literature also suggests high GAD65 antibodies have been associated with various malignancies; although large studies are lacking. This research focuses on i...

A near fatal case of haematuria

Kumar H , O'Shea L , Joyce M , Boran G , Tanner A , Barragry J

We present the case of a thirty five year old salesman in whom microscopic haematuria was detected during a routine employment medical. History and physical examination were unremarkable. A renal ultrasound initiated by the urology service revealed an upper abdominal mass. CT abdomen confirmed a 5x6cm lesion distinct from the right kidney and adrenal gland. A CT-guided biopsy precipitated a hypotensive crisis (90/60mmHg) and hypoglycaemia (blood glucose 2.3mmol/l). 24-hr urina...

Kisspeptin is a crucial activator of reproductive function, stimulating GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus. However, kisspeptin and its receptor are also expressed in other brain regions including the limbic system, which has key roles in emotional processing. Kisspeptin signalling in the limbic system modulates emotional and sexual brain processing during tasks, however the effects of kisspeptin on underlying resting brain activity have not yet been studied. This is vital for o...

Kisspeptin is a crucial activator of reproductive function, playing a critical role in the hypothalamus to activate GnRH neurons and downstream reproductive hormones. However, kisspeptin and its receptor are also expressed in other brain areas, yet little is known about their function here. The limbic system plays a key role in sexual and emotional behaviours and has a high expression of kisspeptin receptors. We therefore hypothesised that kisspeptin administration may modulat...
